Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, died when a helicopter went down in the Marondera rural area of Mashonaland East on the evening of Wednesday, 30 September. The government says no one on the aircraft survived.

What we know

  • A helicopter crashed in rural Marondera at about 5pm on Wednesday, 30 September, and Zimbabwe's government said the information it had pointed to no survivors.
  • Mr Chivayo and Ms Muteke were named among the dead. YEN.com.gh reported that family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo confirmed both deaths to ZBC News and described the relatives as speechless.
  • Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana confirmed that a high-profile businessman was among those aboard, alongside two pilots and other passengers.
  • Police have not yet published the full list of victims, and the cause of the crash and the circumstances of the flight have not been established.

What's disputed / unconfirmed

  • Reports differ on how many people were on board. Police, as quoted by YEN.com.gh, spoke of six occupants, and the government statement as YEN.com.gh described it listed one businessman, three passengers and two pilots, which also makes six. Nkonkonsa reported that Mr Mangwana put the number at seven, including four passengers, and that police revised their earlier count of six.
  • Nkonkonsa reported that emergency services responded to the scene, a detail not carried in the other report.

Why it matters for Ghana

Mr Chivayo was a prominent businessman in Zimbabwe, and his death will be followed closely by business and political circles across southern Africa. For Ghanaians with family, trade or investment links in Zimbabwe, the unsettled passenger count and the missing cause show that the picture is still incomplete. Police have said victims will be named once identification is done and relatives are informed.
