What we know

  • Two people are dead after the motorbike collided with a moving passenger vehicle at the Kasoa Jei River NDC Junction in the Central Region at dawn.
  • Three people were on the motorbike: the rider, the woman, who is believed to be in her late 40s, and the woman's daughter. The woman did not survive the impact, while the rider was taken to hospital and succumbed to his injuries there.
  • The daughter was badly hurt and is being treated at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital, where she is reported to be in critical condition.
  • Residents who heard the impact ran to the scene and found all three people on the motorbike seriously injured.

What's disputed / unconfirmed

  • An eyewitness, Kazabara Sogbe, told Adom News that the rider was going very fast to get the woman to hospital in time, lost control and ran into the vehicle. No police or other account has confirmed the cause of the crash.
  • Mr Sogbe also criticised what he called reckless, fast riding by some commercial motorbike operators on this road, and asked the authorities to build speed ramps there. This is one eyewitness's view and no official response has been reported.

Why it matters for Ghana

Commercial motorbikes, known as okada, are a common way to reach hospitals and workplaces in Kasoa and other fast-growing Central Region towns, and crashes on busy roads regularly leave families bereaved. This case shows what is at stake when a patient is rushed to hospital by road. If authorities act on the call for speed ramps, drivers and riders on the Jei River stretch would face new traffic controls.
