Survey puts John Boadu ahead in NPP chairmanship race before Saturday's delegates vote

A pre-election survey has John Boadu, the NPP's former General Secretary, well ahead of Boakye Agyarko in the race for National Chairman, days before delegates choose the party's new officers in Kumasi on Saturday, 3 October. Its authors caution that undecided respondents could change the picture, and the poll is not a forecast of the actual result.

What we know

• Prof. Smart Sarpong of Kumasi Technical University, working with Feedback Africa, released a Political Environment Assessment Survey 2026 on 29 September. Its sample was 9,882 people: 5,276 NPP delegates plus 4,606 other stakeholders, drawn from 156 constituencies in 14 regions, interviewed between 10 and 28 September.
• In the survey's chairmanship question, Mr Boadu drew 46.5% of all respondents and Mr Agyarko, a former Energy Minister, 24.8%. Former National Chairman Paul Afoko got 9.1%, Sammy Crabbe 5.5%, and 14.1% gave no answer.
• For General Secretary, the survey has the incumbent, Justin Kodua Frimpong, on 56% of all respondents, far ahead of Eugene Boakye Antwi on 14.4%, Sylvester Tetteh on 13.8% and Charles Dwamena on 5%. For National Vice Chairman, lawyer Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) leads with 41.1% among delegates and 37.6% among all respondents.
• The poll has Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover leading for National Organiser on 47.4% and Mavis Hawa Koomson leading for National Women's Organiser on 50.1%. Youth Organiser (Clement Opoku Gyamfi) and Nasara Coordinator (Mohamed Awal) are described as narrow leads, and no one has a clear lead for National Treasurer.
• Prof. Sarpong warned that respondents who withheld their preferences could shape the final outcome, especially in races where the gaps are narrow.
• NPP delegates are due to elect new national officers on Saturday, 3 October 2026, as the party reorganises after its defeat in the 2024 general election.

  The delegate-level results are not reported consistently. MyJoyOnline and Adom Online give Mr Boadu 47.9% and Mr Agyarko 26.2% among delegates as a whole, whereas The New Crusading Guide, Atinka Online and YEN.com.gh attach the 47.9% figure to constituency officers only, and show him on 46.8% with polling station executives and 41.5% with electoral area coordinators.

  Reports differ on the size of the Vice Chairman field. MyJoyOnline and Adom Online cite 13 aspirants, while the survey as reported by The New Crusading Guide and MyJoyOnline covered 14 candidates.

  MyJoyOnline reported that four candidates are in the National Chairman contest, with Mr Boadu listed first on the ballot. It also reported that Mr Boadu, in a statement on 29 September, said his priority is to help the party win power in 2028 and that he has the experience to lead it, pointing to his work on the 2016 and 2020 campaigns. This comes from a single report and from the candidate himself.

  According to MyJoyOnline, Henry Nana Boakye says he may be the youngest of the Vice Chairman hopefuls but has served the party for 26 years, from his start as a polling agent in 2000 through posts at every level from polling station to national, including TESCON at UMaT and KNUST. He is reportedly moving from his post as National Organiser. Adom Online carried similar claims; the claims are his own and have not been independently checked.
