What's disputed / unconfirmed

  • Graphic Online reported that the Latex Foam High Density Student Mattress won a foam mattress brand award for 2025 at an old schools alumni gala dinner held in Accra last Saturday, and that Latex Foam Rubber Products Ltd manufactures it.
  • Per Graphic Online, the award citation estimated that about 90 per cent of old school alumni slept on this mattress during their school years, while the organisers said it was nominated because of its part in Ghana's manufacturing sector and its standing among the country's trusted foam mattress names.
  • Graphic Online said the dinner, themed "Connecting legacies, building future opportunities", drew chief executives, entrepreneurs, corporate and public-sector leaders, professionals and alumni of different generations and schools, and that nine individuals, schools and brands were recognised.
  • Graphic Online listed further honours: Dr Ernest Ofori-Sarpong, who founded and leads the Ofori Sarpong Group, was named alumni president of the year for 2026; Ofori Sarpong House won the project award; Mfantsipim School was named legacy boys school of the year; Moses Baiden of Margins ID Group won in digital ID technology; Dr Kofi Addo-Agyekum of Kofikrom Pharmacy Ltd won in pharmaceuticals; and Dr James Orleans-Lindsay of JL Properties won in real estate development.
  • The paper also reported that Polyfer Blood Tonic was named Pharmaceutical Brand of the Year and that Jay Kay Industries & Investments Ltd. won the Exercise Books and Stationery Brand of the Year award.
  • According to Graphic Online, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, in an address read for him by Dr Emmanuel Newman, Director of Tertiary Education, asked old students' associations to make their networks vehicles for investment, mentorship, entrepreneurship and school development.
  • Graphic Online added that Elizabeth Ohene, who once served as Minister of State responsible for tertiary education, challenged alumni of well-endowed schools to pool their resources in support of schools with less.

Why it matters for Ghana

Old students' associations are a source of money and mentorship for many schools across Ghana, so calls for them to invest in school development bear on schools that lack facilities. The awards also show how local manufacturers and businesses seek recognition among alumni networks in Accra and beyond.
