Pinned summary · as of

A fire has broken out in the North Industrial Area at Avenor in Accra, a district where businesses and homes sit side by side. Reports from the morning say the fire was still burning while crews tried to bring it under control.

What we know

  • The fire started early on Thursday morning in the industrial enclave around Avenor, with flames and smoke visible from the area.
  • At the time the reports were filed, nobody had confirmed what caused the fire, how much damage it had done or whether anyone was hurt.

What's disputed / unconfirmed

  • MyJoyOnline said images shot from inside the Multimedia Group's premises showed smoke and flames over the area; no other report has described them.
  • Adom Online placed the blaze at Kofikrom, within the North Kaneshie Industrial Area, and said it began around 7:30am, driving residents and traders out. Other reports do not give that location or start time.
  • Adom Online also reported that vendors were hauling goods away, that the fire was near Duraplast and the ECG Avenor office, and that power had not been switched off in the area. None of this has been confirmed elsewhere.
  • An eyewitness speaking on Adom FM's Dwaso Nsem programme said a woman had been burnt, adding that she lived at the site with others. No official has confirmed any injury.
  • Citi Newsroom reported that two fire tenders reached the scene, though the blaze stayed fierce, and that an eyewitness felt it had grown because help was slow to come. These accounts come from that report alone.
  • Another eyewitness told Citi Newsroom that some residents were getting in the way of Ghana National Fire Service personnel, making it hard for them to reach the fire, and urged people to let the crews through. This is an allegation by one witness and has not been confirmed.

Why it matters for Ghana

People live and trade close to the industrial area, so a spreading fire puts homes, stalls and jobs at risk in this part of Accra. Whether anyone was hurt and how much was lost is still unknown. Access for fire crews is critical in dense areas like this one, and the picture should become clearer once the fire service gives its own account.
