Ghana will stage its first Black Star Fashion Week over two days in November, with a summit in Accra on 4 November and a fashion show at Royal Senchi on 7 November. The event is run by the Black Star Experience Secretariat, which is backed by the Presidency and headed by Rex Owusu Marfo.

What we know

  • The inaugural Black Star Fashion Week will run for two days, split between Accra and Senchi. Its stated goals are to find new talent, bring the industry together and present Ghanaian fashion to a wider audience.
  • Rex Owusu Marfo heads the Presidency-backed secretariat that is organising the week. The tourism and creative arts ministry is a supporter, as are the Ghana Tourism Authority and the Creative Arts Agency.
  • Day one, 4 November in Accra, is built around the Black Star Fashion Summit. Designers, entrepreneurs, creatives, investors, buyers, manufacturers, policymakers and media are expected, and sessions will deal with subjects ranging from branding and textile innovation to export readiness, online selling, artificial intelligence, sustainability and intellectual property.
  • The Accra day also includes a 16-Region Designer Programme, in which each participating emerging designer offers a creative take on their region. Five designers will be picked at the end, and one of them will move on to the main show at Senchi.
  • The second day, 7 November at Royal Senchi, hosts the Black Star Fashion Show together with a Fashion Village. The village will bring designer showcases, shops, artisans, brand activations and beauty, technology, food, tourism and lifestyle exhibits to one site.
  • Organisers plan to mark the country's cultural variety with music, dance, crafts, food, storytelling and visual arts, and to give awards to people who have contributed outstandingly to the fashion sector.

What's disputed / unconfirmed

  • The Press Radio listed fireside conversations, industry presentations and digital marketing among the Accra programme topics, and also said buyers, investors, manufacturers and retailers will hold networking and business meetings. GhanaWeekend's account of the programme did not include these items.

Why it matters for Ghana

For designers, tailors and textile businesses across the regions, the event offers a chance to be seen by buyers, investors and manufacturers. The 16-Region Designer Programme gives emerging talent outside Accra a national stage, and the Senchi Fashion Village could draw trade for local artisans and tourism businesses. The government-backed Black Star Experience is using the week to promote Ghanaian culture and creative industries.
