Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, who ran the education ministry under the previous government, told Kessben FM that today's difficulties in the sector trace partly to the NDC government's decision to overhaul existing arrangements, according to Kessben Online. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu responded by asking what counsel he could seek from Dr Adutwum, given what he says he inherited.

What's disputed / unconfirmed

  • Kessben Online reported that Dr Adutwum, speaking on Kessben FM, criticised how the education sector is currently run and argued that some of its problems stem from the NDC government's choice to change systems already in place.
  • Dr Adutwum said, according to Kessben Online, that his administration left behind very good machines and systems for running the sector, and that Mr Iddrisu is struggling because the government preferred its own approach to building on them.
  • Kessben Online reported that, in an earlier interview in September, Dr Adutwum said the trouble with the Computerised School Selection and Placement System lay in the policies and algorithms behind it rather than in the software.
  • Kessben Online reported that Dr Adutwum is willing to pass on his own experience to the current minister.
  • Mr Iddrisu, according to Kessben Online, wondered what guidance Dr Adutwum could possibly give and cited challenges which he says the present administration took over from the previous government.

Why it matters for Ghana

School placement, which decides where pupils continue their education, is a concern for many Ghanaian families each year, and the exchange shows the two sides disagreeing on who is responsible for the problems. Parents and teachers will be watching whether the ministry changes how the placement system works.
